Complications of diabetes mellitus, vascular damage of the whole organism, characterized by thickening of the walls and, as a result, deterioration of the blood supply to organs. It is customary to distinguish microangiopathy (damage to small vessels) and macroangiopathy (large vessels). Symptoms depend on the localization of the process. There are diabetic retinopathy (retinal vessels are affected), nephropathy (kidneys), encephalopathy (brain), angiopathy of the lower extremities (diabetic foot) and blood vessels of the heart. The treatment is based on monitoring blood glucose levels and taking drugs that improve blood circulation and increase capillary resistance. In case of macroangiopathy, cholesterol-lowering drugs are indicated, with diabetic nephropathy - diuretics and hypotonic drugs, with retinopathy - drugs that strengthen the retina and normalize metabolism in the vessels.
