Nontoxic goiter or euthyroid goiter – is a compensatory hyperplasia and enlargement of the thyroid gland, occurring without changes in functional activity. In the initial stages of the development of the disease, the goiter is symmetrical, has a soft texture, over time, numerous nodes and cysts are formed. Also, the course of the disease may be accompanied by headache, weakness, tightness and a lump in the throat. In extreme cases, when the goiter reaches a large size, there are problems with swallowing, breathing, developing superior vena cava syndrome. Patients with non-toxic goiter should be treated with iodine-containing drugs, levityroxine. When the goiter reaches an exceptionally large size or when dangerous complications develop, surgical intervention is indicated.
