Chronic or acute ulceration of the mucous membrane of the esophagus under the influence of gastric juice. Such symptoms as heartburn, heaviness and pain in the chest region, vomiting (sometimes with blood), difficulty swallowing, sudden weight loss may indicate an esophageal ulcer. The intensity of heartburn and pain are aggravated by physical exertion or by changing the position of the body. Without treatment, the ulcer can perforate into the mediastinum, pleural or abdominal cavity. Treatment begins with the transition to diet food, cessation of bad habits, walking is recommended. Drug treatment includes taking antacids, proton pump inhibitors, H2-histamine receptor blockers, prokinetics. Chronic esophagus ulcers, which are not amenable to conservative therapy, are treated surgically (by fundoplication with proximal selective vagotomy).
