Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic relapsing disease, a complex of symptoms, which is manifested by the dumping of the contents of the stomach and duodenum into the esophagus. Symptoms of the disease are heartburn, belching, a lump in the throat, dysphagia, nausea, vomiting, bloating, chest pain. Some patients complain of coughing, shortness of breath, upper respiratory tract inflammation, hoarseness, tooth decay, gum disease. GERD is either accompanied by inflammation of the walls of the esophagus (GERD with esophagitis) or not (GERD without esophagitis, non-erosive reflux disease). In most cases, the disease is treated conservatively: the diet is adjusted, the patient is recommended fractional nutrition and smoking cessation, body weight and sleep mode are gradually normalized, medication is prescribed with the inclusion of prokinetics, antacids, proton pump inhibitors, histamine receptor blockers, etc. In extreme cases, surgical treatment is performed.
