History

Archaeologists discovered in the vicinity of mineral springs dishes and other household items related to Ancient Rome and Celtic settlements, which indicates the use of healing properties by people who inhabited the region more than one and a half thousand years ago. Although their language cannot be called truly scientific, the analysis revealed in water, in addition to gold and sulfur, a “magnet”, a kind of “bergkler” and ... “wild” water.

The first turning point in the history of Rogaska Slatina is the city owed to Dr. Paul de Sobre, personal physician of the Habsburg royal family. In 1670, he developed a method of treating the digestive tract, which was based on dosed intake of Rogaska's water. The system turned out to be effective and news of unique properties scattered throughout the empire.

Well, the second, and last, important historical event was the purchase of the surrounding lands by Count Ferdinand Attems. The resort began to be ennobled, respected doctors came here to work, new hospitals appeared. And in 1908, a new well was discovered that filled the pools with water with an even higher percentage of magnesium. It was named Donat in honor of the Donat Mountains, at the foot of which Rogaska Slatina is located.

What to bring

Directly from Rogaska Slatina, it makes sense to bring home bottled Donat Mg water. Its healing properties and proper treatment allows you to continue the treatment course even upon returning home. We recommend consulting with your doctor on this subject, since excessive perseverance in treatment can give a result diametrically opposite to the desired.

If you visit the old pharmacy described earlier, you can buy unique herbal preparations, ointments and even home-made wine there. On the same street there are several pastry shops selling delicious chocolate products.

The Pleterie Monastery will also provide you with cool souvenirs and gifts. Silent monks themselves collect honey and fruits, make cheeses and wines. But their main merit is the production of the "Grushevets" drink, which has become one of the unwritten symbols of all of Slovenia. In addition to great taste, fruit brandy is notable for the fact that in each bottle there is a pear grown directly in it. How it's done? Company's secret!
