Treatment in Bad Kissingen

Bad Kissingen is a town and district center in Bavaria, an ancient balneological gastroenterological resort in the central part of Germany. The small town 100% corresponds to the concept of a resort: the weather here is excellent, there are no industrial enterprises, the percentage of green area of the city is one of the highest in Europe. Not surprisingly, the air is also very clean. At the end of 2021, Bad Kissingen, together with Baden-Baden and Bad Ems, was included in UNESCO's elite list of World Heritage Sites. There are 7 springs of therapeutic mineral water in Bad Kissingen, the water is used externally and internally.

The first five springs are used for drinking cures, while the water from the last two springs is used for balneotherapy treatments and to fill swimming pools. The water from the Runder Brunnen spring is also used for inhalations. The only thermal water in Bad Kissingen, according to the international classification, is the water of the Schönbornsprudel spring (20 °C), the other mineral waters are cold. There is a covered drinking gallery in the city center, and some of the springs are also available in street pavilions and spa hotels. An individual schedule of water intake is made by the attending physician, but most often a double intake of 200-300 ml of water before breakfast and dinner is prescribed. Let us focus on each of the springs in more detail.

Rakoczy. The spring was discovered in the XII century, it was used for therapeutic purposes in 1737. Iron-containing sodium chloride water is prescribed for internal use by patients with gastric juice secretion disorders, chronic inflammatory diseases of the digestive tract mucosa, gallbladder and biliary tract diseases, gallstone disease, liver diseases, intestinal atony, gout.

Pandur. The spring has been known since 1616, until the XVIII century it was called "sharp" spring. By chemical composition, carbon dioxide content and indications for appointment practically does not differ from Rakoczy.

Bitterwasser. The only water of non-natural origin in this list. Kissingen's bitter water has been produced artificially since 1856 by adding a significant amount of magnesium sulphate to Rakoczy water. Vacationers should be especially careful about the dosage of this water, as its mineralization reaches 30 g/l. Usually a single intake of Bitterwasser water does not exceed 50-100 ml, it is prescribed for constipation and weakening of the motor evacuation function of the gallbladder.

Maxbrunnen. The oldest spring in Bad Kissingen, the first mention of its therapeutic properties dates back to 1520. The mineral composition is similar to the waters of Rakoczy and Pandur springs, but due to lower mineralization it is more readily prescribed to patients with increased gastric secretion and accelerated motility of the intestine and gall bladder. Water intake is also indicated for respiratory problems, chronic infectious diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract, and is effective in preventing kidney stones.

Luitpoldsprudel. The spring, named in honor of Prince Leopold II, has been used in drinking cures since the beginning of the 20th century. In 1986, during technical work, another spring, named Luitpoldsprudel "New", was accidentally discovered. While the water of the "old" spring is used in the treatment of gastric juice secretion disorders, heartburn, anaemia and iron deficiency anaemia, the "new" spring has a higher mineralization (8.5 g/l) and is used externally for the treatment of cardiovascular and bronchopulmonary diseases in the Kurhausbad treatment center.

Runder Brunnen. The spring water has been used for therapeutic baths since 1641 and later for inhalations. The water is not suitable for internal use due to its high mineralization. Balneological procedures are effective for diseases of the cardiovascular and bronchopulmonary systems.

Schönbornsprudel. Warm water has been used to fill swimming pools and baths since 1868. The combination of temperature, hydrostatic and reflex factors allows the water to treat many diseases of the musculoskeletal system, skin, endocrine and cardiovascular systems.

Additional methods of treatment

The basis of treatment at the Bad Kissingen resort is the intake of mineral water and various balneological procedures. The effectiveness of treatment programs is enhanced by a visit to a unique structure - a cooling tower, which is a long wall covered with plum branches. The water of the Runder Brunnen spring flows down the branches and, by evaporating, moistens the air and saturates it with negative ions of useful elements. This inhalation therapy is particularly useful for diseases of the upper respiratory tract and nervous system.

Hydropathic and physiotherapeutic procedures, mud treatment, fangotherapy, various massages, reflexotherapy, aerotherapy and ergotherapy are provided in the city's health centers and the treatment departments of numerous spa resorts. Under the supervision of experienced instructors there are gymnastics in the gym and swimming pool, yoga, Nordic walking. The mild temperate continental climate indirectly has a positive effect on immunity, nervous system and respiratory organs.
