Portoroz

Portoroz is one of the most visited resorts in Slovenia, located 150 km away from the capital. Many tourists consider Portoroz to be the most convenient and comfortable city in Slovenia for recreation and recovery, which is greatly facilitated by the access to the Gulf of Piran of the Adriatic Sea. Moderate Mediterranean climate and thermo-mineral water springs from the ground create perfect conditions for treatment of musculoskeletal apparatus, respiratory system, nervous system, gynecological diseases, gastrointestinal diseases and other groups of diseases.

History

It translates the name from Italian quite simply: "Port of Rose". The Italian name of Portoroz is explained by the fact that almost all the lands on the Adriatic coast, including modern Portoroz and the neighbouring Piran, since VII belonged to the Byzantine Empire. Portoroz owes its appearance to the Piran, where Illyrian settlements were based in prehistoric times, then until 178 BC the Celtic tribes lived there, and then it was captured by the Roman Empire.

In the XII century Benedictines came to Piran and founded 4 large monasteries and more than a dozen small churches, including the church of St. Mary the Rosary, built on the bay. In 1251 year the bay near the church was named after it "Portus sanctae mariae de Rosa". This explains the roses in the name of the city and has nothing to do with flowers. And Portoroz began to develop thanks to the same monks who successfully treated rheumatic diseases, ascites, respiratory diseases and other diseases with thermal waters. The official status of Portoroz resort was obtained only in 1885 after the opening of the first hospital, and in 1910 the first large hotel - "Palace" - was opened.
