This is a tiny town with a population of less than 5 thousand people, where, in addition to hotels and resorts, there’s nowhere to work properly. A couple of dozens of houses, pacifying hilly terrain, there are no secrets from the neighbors, and almost the whole city celebrates holidays and good news. Rogaska Slatina is such a fabulous village, living at the expense of a magical spring and living pretty well.
Archaeologists discovered in the vicinity of mineral springs dishes and other household items related to Ancient Rome and Celtic settlements, which indicates the use of healing properties by people who inhabited the region more than one and a half thousand years ago. And the first documented mention of Rogaska Slatina is the chronicle of 1141 year, which describes the thermal spring of healing water. And the first scientific research based on true medicine was carried out in 1572 year by the alchemist Leonard Turneysser. Although their language cannot be called truly scientific, the analysis revealed in water, in addition to gold and sulfur, a “magnet”, a kind of “bergkler” and ... “wild” water.
The first turning point in the history of Rogaska Slatina is the city owed to Dr. Paul de Sobre, personal physician of the Habsburg royal family. In 1670, he developed a method of treating the digestive tract, which was based on dosed intake of Rogaska's water. The system turned out to be effective and news of unique properties scattered throughout the empire.
Well, the second, and last, important historical event was the purchase of the surrounding lands by Count Ferdinand Attems. The resort began to be ennobled, respected doctors came here to work, new hospitals appeared. And in 1908, a new well was discovered that filled the pools with water with an even higher percentage of magnesium. It was named Donat in honor of the Donat Mountains, at the foot of which Rogaska Slatina is located.

Cartesian Monastery of Pleterie
The most popular architectural landmark near Rogaska Slatina, located in a quiet location at the foot of the Goryantsi mountains. The monastery was built at the beginning of the XV century at the foot of the mountains of Goryantsi. The monks of the Cartesian order are bound by a strict vow, they lead a hermit lifestyle, minimize relations with the outside world, and even practically do not communicate with each other. On the territory of the Pleterie Monastery there is a large art gallery, the Gothic Church of the Holy Trinity, and around the perimeter it is surrounded by a high wall with a length of about 2500 meters.
The excursion in Dolenjske Toplice is interesting primarily for visiting the unique Otocec Castle, located on a small island on the Krka River. The castle was founded in the XII century by the Freising bishops as a fortification. Since the XIV century, the castle often changed owners, each of whom tried to make some changes in the interior and exterior decoration of the building, which led to the most unexpected combinations of styles.

What to bring
Directly from Rogaska Slatina, it makes sense to bring home bottled Donat Mg water. Its healing properties and proper treatment allows you to continue the treatment course even upon returning home. We recommend consulting with your doctor on this subject, since excessive perseverance in treatment can give a result diametrically opposite to the desired.
If you visit the old pharmacy described earlier, you can buy unique herbal preparations, ointments and even home-made wine there. On the same street there are several pastry shops selling delicious chocolate products.
The Pleterie Monastery will also provide you with cool souvenirs and gifts. Silent monks themselves collect honey and fruits, make cheeses and wines. But their main merit is the production of the "Grushevets" drink, which has become one of the unwritten symbols of all of Slovenia. In addition to great taste, fruit brandy is notable for the fact that in each bottle there is a pear grown directly in it. How it's done? Company's secret!
Useful advices for tourists
On hot summer days, the streets are full of wasps. The more you brush off the higher the chance of a bite. If you are allergic to wasp stings, always carry antihistamine medication prescribed by a doctor. By the way, on the streets you will see wasp traps filled with special syrup.
How to get there
You will most likely have to get to Rogaska Slatina from Ljubljana. Therefore, we will talk about this direction.
- From public transport, the most convenient option is rail. You will have to overcome a 110 km path with a change in the city of Celje. The first stage will take about 75 minutes, the second - 50 minutes. So, taking into account the time for a transfer, you will get in 2.5-3 hours. But note that trains run from the capital at intervals of 30-60 minutes, but only a couple of trains go from Celje to Rogashka. Check the schedule at the station or on the official website of the Slovenian railways.
- An alternative to the first option may be the combination "Bus + train." But taking the bus to Celje takes 30 minutes longer than taking the train.
- Our company provides transfers to Rogaska Slatina from the airports of Ljubljana, Zagreb and Vienna. When ordering an individual transfer, you will be offered either a car (for up to 3 people) or a minibus (up to 7 people).
- You can order a taxi to your hotel in Rogaska, but for money a taxi at such a distance will fly a pretty penny.
