Colitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the colon caused by an infectious, ischemic or medicinal lesion. Colitis occurs in acute or chronic form. Acute colitis is manifested by epigastric pain, flatulence, mucus and bloody streaks in the stool, nausea, vomiting. When colitis enters the chronic form, pathological changes of the mucous membrane of the large intestine occur, which leads to impaired motility and secretory function. Patients with chronic colitis complain of abnormal stools, pain, bloating, heaviness in the abdomen, excessive formation and discharge of gas, false urges to defecate.
